A fight between a woman’s ex-boyfriend and her current boyfriend turned deadly when their family members and friends became involved Sunday, law enforcement officials said Monday. David Eugene Mitchell, 46, is accused of shooting Christopher McCrory, 27, in the chest at a Coaling residence on Aimee Drive Sunday night. Investigators say Mitchell was one of five people who showed up at the mobile home to fight around 6:30 p.m. The initial argument did not involve Mitchell or McCrory, said Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit commander Capt. Gary Hood. The dispute was between one of Mitchell’s family members and someone who lives with McCrory, he said. “They were messaging each other on Facebook messenger.

The argument escalated, and threats were made,” Hood said. Mitchell and four others arrived at the residence before 6:40 p.m., Hood said. McCrory, two other adults, and four children were there at the time, he said. “Mitchell and McCrory exchanged words and Mr. McCrory was subsequently shot,” Hood said. Witnesses identified the shooter as Mitchell, he said. Law enforcement across the area was searching for him when he surrendered at the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office at 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Hood did not provide details about what the initial dispute was about. Mitchell kept his head down and ignored reporters as deputies led him from the Sheriff’s Office Monday. He was charged with murder and was being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail with bond set at $150,000. Hood said a grand jury will consider whether anyone else involved will face charges. McCrory’s death is the 16th homicide in Tuscaloosa County this year.
